"No Luck After One Month in Australia

Hello. I want to share my experience of professional job hunting in
Australia. I just passed the one month mark here in Sydney looking
for sponsorship for an investment fund job and either skilled migrant
visa or 457 four-year work visa. Only able to gain a few interviews.
I worked for a hedge fun from 1993-1996 when it closed. I was in
middle management, back office operations. I recently completed a
B.A. as a mature student which was after the skilled work. That
irritating detail, combined with the fact that the skill I am relying
on using in Australia I haven_t worked at since 1996, makes me
ineleigible for the new "Skill Matching" migrant visa category. One
would think the Australian Government would recognize that many
adults return to university in later years and it doesn_t have
anything to do with the order it is done in. The hedge fund work was
learned on the job. I think for professional jobs you must have
worked within one or two years of visa application for about one or
two years duration. It is not like I forgot how to do the job!

All the big name recruitment firms without exception would not deal
with me for the reason the experience was too outdated in their
opinion. A handful of money managers who met me were themselves not
concerned with the time since the job, but said the business in
Australia was still too small to take on staff.

With all the talk in the Australian media almost daily here about the
28 year jobless low and how the "skills shortage" will slow Australia
down, you would think a university graduate, skilled in finance,
single, no children, native speaker of English, would walk right in.
I have been told by some the shortage is NOT in white collar
professional roles, but in manual labor trades such as carpentry,
stonemasonry, electrical contracting, plumbing, tree sugery, cooking,
etc. Nurses are in demand. The Easter Weekend edition of the Sydney
Morning Herald had an article in the Career section about two senior
accountants who couldn_t get jobs. They highly doubted the hype about
the skills shortage. On balance, many "second tier", suburban and
country area accounting firms claim to be unable to attract
accounting staff. This seems to be the fault of the federal
government. They do indeed have in place the infrastructure to issue
four year work visas and permanent visas, but make it onerous for
business owners to use the system. As I understand it, and I may be
wrong, first the job category has to be on a list that the federal
government feels the job doesn_t have enough Australians to do. Then
the local firm has to advertise 4 weeks in newspapers to fill the job
locally.
Then, the firm has to find the foreigner. Then, they have to pay
immigration $3000+. to sponsor the foreigner for the visa! They have
to pay the foreigner $50,000 per year minimum to qualify. The smaller
firms don_t want to or cannot afford to do that. So they go without
the extra staff hoping that sooner or later an Australian will walk
in and apply. If you are willing to pay the money, though, the wheels
apparently do turn. One migration agent I spoke with said these days
457 four year work visas are processed electronically by DIMIA in
each state capital. If all is as should be on the application, the
visa can be approved in 48 hours. IF the firm pays all the money to
DIMIA, and anything extra to a migration agent who helped!

However, there is a great reluctance on the part of the federal
government, even if the skills shortage is a real event, to issue
general unrestricted work visas to skilled people such as the young
backpackers get-the "working holiday" visa. They can work for ANY
employer (for 3 months only) within a 12 month stay. Applicants must
be under age 30 and only a small number of countries are eligible.
The USA not included. Before arrival I thought that these young
people would work in cafes, farms, nannying, perhaps some light
clerical temping. All that happens, but what amazed me most was the
big recruitment firms advertise in the backpacker magazines
for."back office operations", "foreign exchange clerk", "global
custody" etc., in short, all things I can do blindfolded! I was told
the young, under 30 backpackers, almost all from England and Ireland
do these jobs, which they gained some experience at as young office
workers back home, at less than what the firms would have to pay me
to qualify for a four year sponsored visa. Apparently even the
backpackers having to leave these jobs after only three months,
requring the firm to retrain another backpacker for only another
three months, is worth the hassle to avoid paying a sponsored four
year foreigner!

I don_t see anything positive developing out of this exploratory
visit."

"Australia insists on reciprocity and until
young Australians are given access to working holidays in any country on
similar terms, it won_t be."

"Backpackers generally do temporary, casual work. No employer is going
to take on someone for a skilled role that requires training and a
_learning curve_ if they can only stay for 6 months. Once again - sympathies, but it_s *really* hard to obtain a job offer
as a tourist. Australian employers generally are not interested in
sponsoring unless they literally cannot find an Australian to do the
same job - so you need special skills, the occupation needs to be in
real demand (eg nursing) or the location is somewhere in remote Australia."

Atsakyk man, kam Australijai nelegalai, a? Ten pilna norinciu dirbti is NZ, Fiji, Samoa ir t.t. kurie turi teise legaliai dirbti.
Vaziuok i Amerika.
